It’s happened to the best of us. You could be on a date, with family, chilling with friends. A menu is placed in front of you. You think, “Oh, I am totally going to order this fancy lookin’ thing and I totally know how to say it.” The waiter appears and just as you’re about to get your Top Chef baller status on, the words come out garbled and you’ve been made a foodie fool.

Prime example? Caramel
Personally, I’ve said “car-mehl” most of my life. I grew up in Memphis, and in the South we tend to blend a lot of words down to fewer syllables… or just say it with such a drawl no one can tell where some syllables went. My father though is from New England, born in New York and grew up in Boston, MA. He says “KAR-ah-mehl”.
